Polish Biographical Dictionary

The Polish Biographical Dictionary (PSB) is a Polish-language scholarly reference work offering an alphabetically arranged collection of authoritative biographies of around 29,000 notable Poles and foreigners active in Poland. It covers both renowned and lesser-known figures, from the earliest rulers of Poland to individuals who died in 2000.

Founded in 1934 by the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU), the PSB was initiated and first edited by Professor Władysław Konopczyński. Since 1958 it has been published by the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), and since 1999 it has been a joint project of PAN and PAU.

The PSB now comprises 56 volumes (A–T), totaling more than 36,000 pages. Prepared by several hundred contributors per volume and nearly 4,000 scholars overall, each entry undergoes a rigorous, multi-stage editorial and scholarly review process to ensure accuracy and high academic standards. Alongside its scholarly value, the Dictionary presents vivid and engaging narratives of human lives. Work is underway on a second series, and selected content is available online through the iPSB portal.
