The 2024 European Encyclopedia Conference in Oslo brought together encyclopedists from across Europe to discuss the evolution and challenges of encyclopedias, with a focus on editorial practices and the role of artificial intelligence in shaping content creation. Hosted by the Great Norwegian Encyclopedia, the conference delved into various key themes.
A central focus of the discussions was on the importance of editorial work and the role of AI. Participants emphasized the editorial team’s responsibility in maintaining high-quality, accurate content while exploring how AI technologies are shaping encyclopedia creation. Topics included the impact of AI on search engines, language models, and copyright issues.
The conference also showcased insightful case studies, such as the creation of the Ukrainian encyclopedia under the challenging circumstances of conflict. Italy’s Treccani Encyclopedia was another highlight, recognized for its significant historical contributions.
Another key theme was the use of encyclopedias as vehicles for knowledge diplomacy. Discussions explored their potential in addressing misinformation and enhancing scientific publishing through encyclopedic platforms. Collaboration and innovation were also key topics, with participants examining partnerships with platforms like Wikimedia and Wikidata to improve accessibility and knowledge sharing. The importance of publishing encyclopedias for children and reaching new audiences was also discussed.
The event provided ample opportunities for networking and highlighted the potential for cross-border cooperation. Participants were encouraged to collaborate on future projects, further strengthening the ties between European encyclopedias.
Countries represented at the conference included Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Georgia, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Slovakia, Sweden, and Ukraine. Institutions such as the Bulgarian Encyclopedia, Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography, Lex.dk, European Parliamentary Research Service, Georgian Encyclopedia, Treccani Italian Encyclopedia, National Encyclopedia of Latvia, Encyclopaedia Beliana, National Encyclopedia of Sweden, and Ukrainian Encyclopedia Press contributed to the discussions.
The conference also coincided with Norway’s National Day celebration, providing an opportunity for cultural exchange and collaboration. This blend of intellectual discourse, networking, and cultural appreciation created a vibrant and enriching atmosphere, paving the way for enhanced encyclopedia practices across Europe and beyond.
