Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine

The Institute of Encyclopedic Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is an academic institution focused on the creation and scholarly study of encyclopedias (Kyiv, Ukraine). Its core mission is to assemble the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine (EMU), initiated by the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Shevchenko Scientific Society. The Institute also engages in in-depth research in the arts and humanities. Since its founding in 2004, the Institute has produced 24 volumes of the EMU, launched its digital counterpart, and published a range of academic publications, including reference works, dictionaries, monographs, methodological guides, and papers. The EMU is the Institute’s flagship project and currently the largest Ukrainian encyclopedia, comprising 24 volumes, over 78,000 articles, and contributions from more than 23,000 experts. The origins of the EMU trace back to the restoration of Ukraine’s independence in 1991, emerging as a response to the need for a modern national encyclopedia free from Soviet ideological constraints. Scholars of the Ukrainian diaspora in Western Europe played a key role in shaping the EMU by helping to introduce European traditions of encyclopedic practice.
